First Editing Notes

This is my editing notes sheet for my first cut. I am continuing to edit, however, uploading recent cuts to show my progress.

First cut of film

This is my first cut of the opening two minutes of Intention. There are a few things which still need changing, such as, the opening water shot needs to be longer. The ending water shot has a 'pinnacle' sign which comes up which means that the editing program I am using does not have the edit. There is also an awkward zoom into him tearing up the photo, the camera is very jolty and I will be marked down if I keep it like this so will have to do some clever cutting. Also, this opening must be a minimum of two minutes so I have to make this longer.

This is my first cut so my partner must add titles and I will continue editing.

Lighting Experiments

This video shows my lighting experiments. I have split the screens to show the normal shot and the edited. I experimented with the bedroom scene because in the majority of the shots of Jodie the light is not hitting her correctly so I brightened the shots.

Character's Mise-En-Scene

Actor Release Forms

Pictures

This was the photoshoot for the picture which Dan Boren holds and then rips up. The photoshoot was outside and we relied on the morning sun to brighten Jodie's face. The aim was to have a natural looking shot to make it seem like an amateur picture. I wanted it to be taken from Dan's perspective as if he had just called by him and she just turns around.
I wanted Kate to be in a long coat and look like she was just on a normal day out, dressing suitably for the weather in England also, her hair to be down so it looked natural.
This first shot is not suitable because her back is facing the camera and it is important for her to recognisable and therefore her face must be visible.
Although it looks natural with her hair across her face it is covering her left eye and her hand is distracting.

This shot is not suitable because I wanted there to be direct mode of address.

I like this shot because the light is behind her and is verging on a silhouette figure. Due to it not being a CU it adds a sense of mystery as to who this character is.

I chose this picture.
This is not suitable because Jodie is not in shot and the school girls in site are irrelevant.
This picture looks too obvious that she is posing.
Crew members arm in shot.
Blurred face.
Eyes closed.
Eyes are closed.
Her eyes are squinting.
Eyes are closed.
No direct mode of address.
Eyes closed.
I like the light in this photo, a strong contender.
Eyes closed.
Eyes half closed.
No direct mode of address.
Hair is slightly blurred, even though taken from Dan's perspective and he is an amateur I think a photo can be found which is more appealing.

Hair covering her right eye and I think there are better photos.

Sam Hoare Audition for Dan Boren

Sam Hoare, aged 17 auditioned for Dan Boren in the 2014 film, Intention. I only needed one take of Sam as I knew he is perfect for the part. He was pleasant on set and focused when the camera was running. I had met Sam before at the Insanity auditions and asked him to come back for this film. I'm glad he returned as I will be giving him the role.

Auditions will end.

Sib Tayerera Audition for Dan Boren

Sib Tayerera, aged 17 auditioned for the lead male, Dan Boren. Sib was a very enthusiastic person on set and seemed to feel that the script needed changing and so added some extra words into it. Whether this was purpose improvisation or nerves I will never know. I do know that he did not suit the character and I cannot imagine him with Jodie Elliott playing Steyner.

Auditions will continue.

Declan Hood Audition for Dan Boren

Declan Hood, aged 17 auditioned for the role of Dan Boren the lead male character. I felt Declan struggled to read the lines in the portrayal I would have liked. Declan although a happy character off set lacked intonation on screen. Also, Declan did not have the physical stature that I am looking for. I only needed one take to know that he is not suitable.

Auditions for Dan Boren will continue.

Dan, voice-over for opening of film: How do we know we’re living? We are all searching for something but do we ever really know what that something is until we've found it. Only the strong survive and find their meaning. Is this all a dream? A dream which has gone on for too long? Someone’s forgotten to wake us up and we’re stuck here waiting.

Jodie Elliott Audition for Kate Steyner

Jodie Elliott, aged 19 auditioned for the lead female character, Kate Steyner. Jodie expressed a happy personality and was ready and prepared on set. Jodie followed direction well and since meeting her before at the Insaniy auditions I've noticed a great change in character. Jodie was professional and relaxed into the role. I only needed two takes for Jodie. For these reasons, I have decided to give her the role of Kate Steyner.

Auditions will be discontinued.

Thea Miller Audition for Kate Steyner

Thea Miller, aged 17 auditioned for one of the main characters, Kate Steyner. Thea appeared extremely nervous and slightly agitated throughout the audition process. Also, Thea was chewing gum throughout the audition, not only was this very unprofessional but there is a strict policy of no gum on set. Only two takes were needed for me to know she is not what I am looking for. She also was shorter than the wanted 5'7".

Thea was not chosen. Auditions to continue.

Ella Kennedy Audition for Kate Steyner

Ella Kennedy, aged 18 auditioned for the lead Kate Steyner. Kate Steyner is the main character alongside Dan Boren. The majority of the time Ella was very focused on set. A slight hiccup when she forgot her line and started laughing during a new take. She apologised after stating this was her first audition. The audition process can be very nerve-racking. Although her lines were delivered well, I am looking for someone with a different appearance. I would like someone who stands out against the others and has a certain ora about them which draws you in.

I will consider Ella but other auditions are coming up.

Dan:   Is this it?

Kate: What?

Dan:   This? Life? Is this all there is?

Kate:  Maybe. But I reckon if you look for more you’ll find it.

Dan:   Don’t you get bored?

Kate:  Not bored. Maybe it feels like things are slowing down a bit but I'm not bored, we share something that couldn't be boring. Are you bored?

Dan:   Curious. Curious to see what’s out there.
